Fast-track Design-Build delivers new learning space

The Wagner High School Welding Shop is a simple and efficiently designed and constructed fast-track project that utilized an existing JOC contract and the Design-Build delivery method. The Design-Build delivery method ensured a streamlined process from conception to completion, with a single point of contact throughout the process. The RVK/Marksmen GC team came together with a clear mission, design and build a welding shop in the least amount of time possible.

The project consisted of a pre-engineered steel frame with highquality metal panel cladding and roofing system. The building was designed to meet the client's specific needs, including large clearspan space and high ceilings to accommodate welding equipment, materials storage, and exhaust systems. Additionally, the project included necessary mechanical and electrical systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, and electrical wiring. The building's lighting was designed to provide ample illumination for students and teachers to ensure safety in a hands-on learning environment.

The extremely long lead time of the electrical switchgear prevented "power-on" in the facility for four months despite the otherwise complete building. The Design-Build delivery method ensured effective communication between the design and construction teams, minimizing most project delays or potential errors.
